General Meeting and Resource Room

This months meeting is on Saturday 15 July 2023 will be held at the usual place, the Uniting Church Hall, 23 William Street, Christies Beach, South Australia.

The Resource Room will be open from 12noon for borrowing books. If you would like to use a computer before the meeting begins it will need to be booked.

Members can attend for free and guests are $3 per person. Please bring a gold coin if you would like afternoon tea (eg. coffee or tea plus biscuit or cake). Also change if you would like to purchase from the trading table (eg. home made jam, books, etc).

The meeting time is 1:15pm and talk is by Richard Venus on the Overland Telegraph Line. Richard is a retired electrical engineer with an interest in engineering heritage. He has served as chairman of Engineering Heritage SA; deputy chair of the national body Engineering Heritage Australia; and Vice President of the History Council of SA. He has been instrumental in awarding national heritage recognition plaques for the Overland Telegraph Line, the Joining Point at Frew Ponds, and the East-West Telegraph.  Last year, 2022, was the Sesquicentenary or 150th Anniversary of the Overland Telegraph Line – and infrastructure project like no other which transformed life in Australia. In his talk, Richard will describe some of the events which led up to and resulted – finally – in the completion of this communication revolution which connected Australia to the world.
