REMINDER: This months meeting is on Saturday 18 February 2023 and will be held at the usual place, the Uniting Church Hall, 23 William Street, Christies Beach, South Australia.
The Resource Room will be open from 12noon for borrowing books. If you would like to use a computer before the meeting begins it will need to be booked.
Members can attend for free and guests are $3 per person. Please bring a gold coin if you would like afternoon tea (eg. coffee or tea plus biscuit or cake). Also change if you would like to purchase from the trading table (eg. home made jam, books, etc).
The meeting time is 1:15pm and talk is by Benjamin Hollister on German Adelaide. Everyone knows about the ‘Old Lutheran’ settlers in South Australia at Hahndorf, Lobethal and in the Barossa Valley, but the Germans who lived in the City of Adelaide are far less known as a community. Companies such as John Martin’s and Holdens, and infrastructure such as the Central Adelaide Telephone Exchange (the first in Australia) are all due to German’s living in the city. Ben Hollister specialises in group of Germans from 1836 to 1920 and will give a brief overview of the community, present a website dedicated to the stories of these people, and explain some of the sources used and issues found when identifying City Germans.
We have a Covid-19 plan.
